How to install a nest box ?

Here are a few tips to ensure that birds will come to the nest box you install.

Choose a nest box suited to the type of bird you wish to attract to your garden

 When?

From late autumn onwards, and by the end of February at the latest.

If nest boxes are not hung until spring, they will have low occupancy in the first year.

 How?

Screw a strip of wood onto the back of the nest box. It is this strip of wood that you will attach to the trunk using a cord or sheathed electrical wire.

Next, place small wedges of wood between the electrical wire and the bark of the trunk, to allow you to pull it tight against the tree.

The nest box should lean forward slightly, in order to prevent water accumulation and resist wind. To be even safer, drill two holes for water evacuation (at one front corner and one rear corner).

ATTENTION: Do not attach a perch onto the nest-box, as this will offer a point of support for potential predators!

Finally, to increase your chances of success, consider planting hedges and, in winter, provide mixtures of fat and seeds.
