| Slag heaps as refuges for fauna Resulting from activities at the Sabatier pit, the slag heap was built up from 1913 onwards. A conical slag heap, it has retained its original characteristics. From its summit, the beech and oak forest of Raismes stretches out as far as the eye can see. It is home to woody vegetation (birch, poplar) as well as rich and varied fauna and flora, including the Old World swallowtail butterfly and the blue-winged grasshopper. |
