The Amaury Nature Site
Water is the key feature of this nature site, home to the Amaury Environmental Education Centre at Hergnies, where the buildings are situated on and around an old pithead. Nature has slowly taken back the area that used to be dedicated to mining activity. Reed beds and wet woodland habitants have grown up, creating a medium for active learning about the environment.

When coal was mined at the site, the considerable volumes extracted left large cavities underground. Over time these cavities settled, and eventually caved in, filling with water and aquatic plants.

In the water you can see bladderworts and small water lilies, and at the edges there are reed beds colonised with herbaceous plants such as bulrush and sedge. The wet woodland areas are dominated by willow trees.
